Once I’ve stretched the canvas, sized it a couple of times, sanding the rough bits off between coats, a couple of coats of gesso primer will give a good surface to take paint. Of course if you use smaller ready stretched canvases none of this is needed. However I usually coat them with more gesso for a smoother canvas with less “tooth”.

There are hopefully four little videos of me preparing a canvas to paint on. I use pre made bars, a big roll of canvas I bought, then rabbit skin glue ( vegan options are available), then gesso paint, a couple of coats. The glue and gesso need to dry and be sanded between coats. All available on the net but for canvas gesso and glue I go to Atlantis arts in London. Great firm to deal with. This is all subjective of course, the canvas comes in different weights, the bars come in various profiles and the gesso comes in a range of coarseness. Everyone I’ve dealt with over the years has been very willing and pleased to advise on your individual needs.

Large oil painting. These posts sticking up are the remnants of old stake nets which used to hold a maze of nets to catch salmon. This is the Solway, but with the light this way and the foreground stones together with the desolate sand and posts it starts to take on the look of another planet! However, it’s all there, Rockliffe bay and Balcary.

A small oil on canvas painting. Channels and gulleys in the Solway. A trip in a gyrocopter gives new insights to the shapes made by the tide and currents. I gave it a better sense of place by painting a tiny bit of marsh up in the top left.

Fine Day near Finglandrigg. Oil on linen. At just over a metre long I wanted to draw in as much information about this place as I could without getting into a size that was too crazy.
This should have been posted with an earlier fieldscape of Bow. Both places that I have strong emotional and historic connections with.

Tidal creek on Burgh Marsh. These things start off as tiny little rivulets back up in the fields or on the peat moss. If they originate from the moss the water in them always has the look of malt vinegar. By the time these tiny streams have got to the Solway Firth they are often ten feet deep and twenty wide where they’ve cut through the soft sandy soil. Every time the tide comes in they fill up with sea water in which , as children, we would swim- supervised of course. It was warmer and safer than being out in the main channel!

The old Balcary fishery and Heston island in the rain. We recently stayed at the hotel there right on the beach. Always worth a visit.
The extreme right hand end of Heston island is called Daft Ann’s Steps. The reason for this remains unclear!

I’ve now found out that the local legend is that Daft Ann was a person from Auchencairn who wanted to cross from the south end of Heston isle to Balcary point and laid stones in front of her to aid her crossing. It didn’t work and she unfortunately drowned. It is possible to cross from the mainland to the isle at low tide, but at the more northerly end.
